Wound Care

Workshop participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the importance of clinical governance in wound management inclusive of scope of practice, policy, evidence-based practice, inter-professional practice and consumer engagement.
The workshop content includes:
- Clinical Governance in Wound Management
- Dressing Product Workshop
- Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement
- Wound Assessment
- Overview of Common Wound Types; including Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Skin Tears and Skin Ulcers
Regarding dressing products, the generic properties and guidelines for use of commonly used dressing products for the management of acute and chronic wounds will be discussed. Clinical methods of application will be demonstrated which will allow participants to examine the products. Participants will use clinical case histories and moulage wounds to actively apply this information to assess a wound, determine the goals of care and select appropriate dressings for the wound.
The Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement workshop will review the principles of wound debridement (indications for and contraindications) and discuss associated scope of practice issues that underpin debridement. Participants will learn essential clinical skills to undertake conservative sharp wound debridement by using sharp instruments to debride pig skin to reveal underlying anatomical structures of pig’s trotters.
An overview of commonly seen chronic wounds such as diabetes related foot ulcers, skin tears, pressure injuries and leg ulcers will be provided. Key physiological, assessment and management parameters will be discussed.
