GP Cancer Education – Neck lumps: when to be suspicious

Overview
Neck masses are a common cause of presentation to general
practice for both adults and children. It is important primary care
health professionals are confident in the diagnosis, management,
and referral of neck lumps.
Learning outcomes*
1. Describe modifiable factors known to increase the risk of
malignant neck lumps
2. Outline the differential diagnosis of neck lumps in adults
and in children
3. Identify the clinical features of neck lumps requiring
urgent investigation
4. Summarise the urgent referral pathway for adults
presenting with a neck lump
5. Summarise the urgent referral pathway for children
presenting with a neck lump
